J David Thompson is a Juris Doctor candidate at Washington & Lee University School of Law focusing on International Human Rights Law and National Security Law with a BS in Economics and MBA–Leadership from Liberty University. He is Co-Director of Service to School and a 2016 Veterans in Global Leadership Fellow. He brings experience on human rights, international relations, strengthening civil society, refugee issues, interagency collaboration, and countering violent extremism.
Prior to Washington & Lee, he served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police officer and Special Operations Civil Affairs with multiple deployments to Afghanistan and one to Jordan—receiving a Bronze Star amongst other decorations. As an MP in Afghanistan he partnered alongside security and government officials to expand government outreach. As a Civil Affairs Officer in Afghanistan he trained Afghan military forces, mentored government officials, advised Naval Special Warfare on civil concerns, coordinated humanitarian assistance, and collaborated in refugee response. In Jordan, David worked at the U.S. Embassy in countering violent extremism, strengthening civil society, and refugee response with other United States Government organizations, the United Nations, and various non-governmental organizations.
While at Washington & Lee, David conducted pro bono research for the World Bank Group's Women, Business, and the Law on gender-based discrimination within the Jordanian Penal Code. This research helped result in the repeal of the "rape law," which allowed rapists to forego punishment by marrying their victims. David also interned with Physicians for Human Rights–Israel on human rights abuses, particularly the right to health, for Palestinians, prisoners and detainees, and refugees living inside Israel and the oPt. He then participated in a law and policy tour with Our Soldiers Speak, meeting with Members of the Knessett, Supreme Court, and IDF commanders.
His works have been published in USA Today, Roanoke Times, Jordan Times, Addis Standard, EvoLLLution Magazine, Lima Charlie News, Jerusalem Online, and the News-Gazette. He currently has 1 published book: 30 Days with Gail. Outside of work and school David enjoys reading, hiking, outdoor activities, exercising, traveling, and writing.
